• Aim to pay the full statement balance by its due date. Purchase interest-free periods depend on your card’s terms and often require full repayment; paying only the minimum generally leaves a balance that attracts interest.
  • Know the statement date, payment due date, interest rate, minimum payment and fees. Set reminders or a suitable direct debit, and make sure the paying account has enough money. A payment instruction alone does not guarantee that payment succeeds.
  • Avoid treating cash advances as ordinary purchases. They may attract immediate interest and separate fees. Check annual, late-payment and foreign-currency charges; rewards rarely compensate for expensive interest on a carried balance.
  • Review each statement, keep your PIN and one-time passwords private, and report unfamiliar transactions promptly to your issuer. If you start carrying debt, reduce new spending and make a repayment plan rather than relying on the minimum indefinitely.

A simple monthly habit

For Rs 5,000 of planned card spending, set aside Rs 5,000 to pay the statement when due, plus any applicable fees. You do not need to carry an interest-bearing balance just to demonstrate responsible credit use. If full repayment becomes difficult, pay at least the required minimum on time where possible and contact the issuer before you miss a payment.
